Maplewood, Minnesota Fire Department Oral History ProjectThe Maplewood Fire Department Oral History Project explores the role of fire protection in the neighborhoods that later became the City of Maplewood, Minnesota. Interviews were conducted with volunteers from the Gladstone Volunteer Fire Department, Parkside Volunteer Fire Department, and East-County-Line Volunteer Fire Department, departments who served the citizens from the late 1940s to 1999, when the city took over the fire service. Through these stories we appreciate of the need of fire protection in a growing suburban community before city fire service were established. These oral histories provide an understanding how the volunteer fire service influenced this suburban community's development, and the individual contributions, sacrifices, and challenges that were made to provide this public service.
